Can your employees ask you ANYTHING???

Byron Ellis - Wednesday, November 30, 2011

A common sight at the Zappos' world headquarters is a well decorated workspace.  Employees are encouraged to create a workspace that shows off their own personality.

At Zappos, Tony Hsieh, CEO, has a monthly employee newsletter called "Ask Anything".  Employees are encouraged to literally ask anything and they get an honest answer.

Here are some samples of questions that have been submitted:

When is the holiday party?

What other music have we considered having as our hold music?

Do you know which brands are being discontinued?

Why are women's and men's shoe sizes different?

Do vegetarians eat animal crackers?  (Love this one)

Could you use more communication in your company?  What kind of questions would you get if you did this within your organization or group?  Take an idea from Zappos and create your own "Ask Anything" newsletter.

Have you developed a good reading habit?

Are you a reader?  I mean the kind of person that understands how much you can learn from others who have already "done it"?  Most successful people have a reading habit...but what if you need to get the habit started with your employees?

In "Delivering Happiness - A Path to Profits, Passion, and Purpose", Tony Hsieh's book (CEO of Zappos.com, Inc.), Tony mentions how a short conversation with one of his executives turned in to a reading program for the entire organization.  Here is an excerpt from a memo to Tony from Fred Mossler:

"I was thinking about our book conversation  Maybe a cool way of encouraging people to read would be to create a board with everyone's name down one side and recommended books along the top.  When a person completes one, they would get a check mark in the box."

Five years later, they had one hundred titles available for free to all of the employees and visitors with many becoming required reading for employees to help them pursue growth and learning.

Go grab a white board and start a list.  I recommend putting Tony's book on the board.

This is a shot of some of the workstations in the Zappos' World headquarters

in Nevada.  It is one laid back...and messy place.  The entire laid back attitude

contributes greatly to the culture.
